Africa Week 17th - 21st June 2024

Last week we all greatly enjoyed taking part in Africa Week, providing lots of opportunities to learn about a different culture.

The week was launched on Monday with a visit from Kwame; an African Drummer from Ghana.  He amazed us all with his incredible musical talent and we all greatly enjoyed drumming along together to many wonderful African songs and rhythms.

On Tuesday we explored African art. Some of us created African printed fabric using traditional Adinkra patterns.

Other classes made African thumb pots from clay and used a range of fine motor skills to create pots from card.

On Wednesday we all enjoyed listening to African folk tales and stories. Some classes enjoyed exploring a range of African fruits while sharing a sensory story of ‘Handa’s Surprise’.

Other classes learnt about ‘Anansi’ the African spider, listening to a folk tale and exploring many incredible props linked to the story.

On Thursday we all learnt about African music and enjoyed making our own musical instruments. Some of us made shakers and others made African thumb pianos.

On Friday we enjoyed exploring a range of African foods through our senses of sight, smell, touch and taste. The plantain crisps were a great hit!

Throughout the week we also explored Africa in our classes. Activities included learning about:

    • the different countries that make up Africa & their flags
    • Africa’s geographical features; savannah, desert, rain forest, cities, etc.
    • the differences between Britain and Africa
    • African Animals
    • African folk tales

Some of us also enjoyed looking at maps of Africa and making passports.

To conclude African Week we all met in the school hall on Friday afternoon for an African music and dance session with the instruments we had made.

Everyone greatly enjoyed coming together as a whole school team to learn about a different culture & we’re already looking forward to next year’s event!
