Dear Parents and Carers,

CPR Training

We recently welcomed CPR specialist Dan Osbourne in school to deliver CPR & Defib training to pupils. Dan works for a charity called Jay's Aim, which offers free CPR training. Jay was Dan's brother who died of a heart attack.

The training was well received by Keth’s (Class 12) and Niki's (Class 8) classes. Pupils learnt how to do 30 chest compressions followed by 2 rescue breaths. They were all able to demonstrate what they would do if someone collapsed and was not breathing using DRABC.

This stands for:

  1. Check for Danger
  2. Check for Response
  3. Open Airway
  4. Check Breathing
  5. Check Circulation
  6. Treat the steps as needed

Royal Correspondence

Pupils in Class 7 and 8 have again received a card from Buckingham Palace! They sent a handmade card to King Charles last term to congratulate him on his coronation. They were delighted to receive a reply this week with a photo of him and Queen Camilla, plus an accompanying letter saying how the King was “deeply touched” that Mill Water pupils had taken the trouble to write to him. This follows a similar reply from the King after pupils sent their condolences for the loss of his mother Queen Elizabeth last year.

Learning About Different Jobs

Class 6 have been exploring different job roles this term, we have thought about what Tony, Dee, Clare and Leigh do for their jobs. They are very busy and look after us well, we wouldn't be without them! Outside of school, we have learnt more about what a road worker, dentist, bus driver and police man do for their job too. We loved our role play activities and worked hard in our roles. 

Welcome New Teacher

We are delighted to welcome teacher Ginny Coggles to Mill Water this term.

She says: “Hi, I am a teacher with 26 years of experience and was a class teacher at Mill Water when the school was based in Honiton and my knees weren’t quite so creaky! I left to continue to work with children and young people with Special Educational Needs and Disabilities across Devon and am delighted to be back at Mill Water as a class teacher on a Monday and Tuesday. When I am not working I am a keen walker and gardener. I enjoy reading and also spending time with my friends and family. Until quite recently I played netball, but now just enjoy socialising with my ex-team members! I enjoy Yoga, Pilates and Swimming and spending time in the beautiful Devon countryside.”

Meet and Greet for New Parents and Carers

Parents and carers of our new pupils are invited to a Meet and Greet event in school on Friday 20th October from 12.30-1.30pm

This will be a chance to learn more about the school and to meet staff and other parents. Tea and coffee will be served. Parents and carers are welcome to collect their child afterwards, ensuring they sign them out.

PTFA

Do you have skills that might support the Friends of Mill Water PTFA?

Perhaps you’re good at managing accounts, admin or communications?

If so our PTFA would love to hear from you. It needs members who can volunteer a bit of time each term. This will ensure that it can keep supporting the fun activities that raise funds for extras for pupils. No job is too onerous. It’s all about teamwork, having fun and the occasional slice of cake!

Crowdfunder for Mill Water Pupils’ Gardening Project

Donate £1 to Mill Water and a national Crowdfunder scheme will double it!

The Save Our Wild Isles Community Fund is a collaboration between Aviva, the WWF and the RSPB. They have teamed up to support projects that protect and restore nature. Mill Water’s outdoor learning initiative is one of their chosen schemes.
